Bearspaw is a rural community on the NW corner of Calgary. Its boundaries are Calgary on the east side, the river on the south end, Highway 567 to the north and it goes as far as Cochrane to the west but past Lochend Rd it is rather known as the Glendale area.
The population of Bearspaw is increasing every year and there are now almost 2000 homes on acreage properties in the area ranging in size from 2 acres to quarter sections (160 acres) or larger. 30 years ago Bearspaw was predominantly a farming area but over the years subdivisions were approved first for 20 acre parcels and later for 2 and 4 acre parcels, all serviced by drilled wells. About 12 years ago the Rockyview Water Co-op pipeline was approved and built which opened up the area for more intensive subdivisions by providing a reliable water supply and taking the pressure off the water table.
As the Bearspaw Community has grown so have the services for the area residents. The Bearspaw School was built 3 years ago and takes children from Bearspaw for Kindergarten to Grade 8. The Bearspaw Lifestyle Centre is the large building next to the School and it offers community programs for residents of the the area including scouting programs, drama productions, social events, sporting programs, a playschool program and much more. An excellent source of information about the Bearspaw Community Association and the Bearspaw area generally can be found at the Community website www.MyBearspaw.ca .
Near the School and Lifestyle centre is the historic Old Bearspaw School building that is available for rent for small groups and private functions. This old building was originally located on the other side of the Highway, next to the Lions Club and, through the efforts of the local Historical Society it was saved from demolition, relocated and renovated to its current location across from the Lifestyle Centre.
